Lyrics Translations in a Time of Petiks

TRANSLATION #1. If you were born somewhere in the 1980s and you have a good memory for 1990s karaoke, you probably know “O Giliw Ko” by Father and Sons, reprised by Aegis.  Here’s my translation take.

Love of My Life (I’m Really Missing You)

Translation of “O Giliw Ko” by Father and Sons/Aegis

All alone in the night
Dreaming of you tonight
I cannot get you out of my mind

When I make it to bed
You’re still stuck in my head
All I want is to hold your hand

Love of my life, I’m really missing you
I wanna walk with you right under the stars
Love of my life, I’m really missing you
Oh I want to hold you in my arms…

And when you’re with me for real
Heaven is what I feel
Oh the happiness, I cannot conceal

And when I don’t see you
I feel so sad and blue
Without you I don’t know what to do

Love of my life, I’m really missing you
I wanna walk with you right under the stars
Love of my life, I’m really missing you
Oh I want to hold you in my arms…

All alone in the night
I’m dreaming of you tonight
I cannot get you out of my mind

And I pray that you’re here
So I could hold you my dear
With you, I have nothing to fear

Love of my life, I’m really missing you
I wanna walk with you right under the stars
Love of my life, I’m really missing you
Oh I want to hold you in my arms…

Love of my life, I’m really missing you
I wanna walk with you right under the stars
Love of my life, I’m really missing you
Oh I want to hold you in my arms…

TRANSLATION #2. Now that I’ve successfully annoyed you with a bad hit from the 1990s that some of you want to forget, here’s something for the John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo fans.  “Maging Sino Ka Man” was one of my favorite soaps, and the song that soap was named after is one of my favorite hits from Rey Valera.  What better way to pay homage to the man than this…

Whoever You Are

Translation of “Maging Sino Ka Man” by Rey Valera

Oh you know that love is just that way
Trust is what we need to make this stay
The love that you once had, you know I don’t really care
‘Coz I love you and I’ll always be there
Don’t even think of something else
All those explanations won’t do just as well
Whatever your past is, you can throw it to the dark
‘Coz you know that I love you, whoever you are

I love you, my love for you is true
All that matters is why I love you
You know I’m lovin’ you, whoever you are

Why I’m loving you may look so wrong
I am just so blind for you, my love is strong
I could care less about the loves that you’ve gone through
You know that I love you because you’re you

I love you, my love for you is true
All that matters is why I love you
You know I’m lovin’ you, whoever you are

TRANSLATION #3. I think that Martin Nievera is one of the best singers we have in the country today (if only for the fact that at “ASAP,” he makes Zanjoe Marudo, John Lloyd Cruz, and Jake Cuenca look like a failed audition take for The Three Tenors).  Speaking of John Lloyd-Bea, which by now you assume would be my favorite love team, here’s my take on Martin’s classic, “Ikaw ang Lahat Sa Akin.”

You Are Everything To Me

Translation of “Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin” by Martin Nievera

You are everything to me
Even if you’re no longer with me
You’re a beautiful memory
Just like yesterday, that’s in my mind forever

You are everything to me
Though this love is not what it’s meant to be
Should I forget what once was we
How can I ever stop what I’m really feeling
“You are my everything,” that’s what my heart is shouting…

And if now is not the time, not the place
For me to love you once again
Tomorrow till the end of time
Until forever, I’ll be waiting

You are everything to me
I pray for you, to whatever Gods there may be
Should I ever forget what was you and me
How can I ever stop what I’m really feeling
“You are my everything,” that’s what my heart is shouting…

And if now’s not the time, not the place
For me to love you once again
Tomorrow till the end of time
Until forever, I’ll be waiting

How can I forget a love that once was meant to be
Even if my heart shouts
You are everything to me…

And if now is not the time, not the place
For me to love you once again
Tomorrow till the end of time
Until forever, I’ll be waiting

TRANSLATION #4. Say what you will about Claire dela Fuente and the way she jacks up bus fare, but she does have a jacked-up voice.  On those rare occasions that I do watch “Wowowee,” I enjoy watching her be a contestant with Imelda Papin and Eva Eugenio.  I sort of played around with her classic jukebox hit, “Sayang.”  Sing along with me as I present…

Damn

Translation of “Sayang” by Claire dela Fuente

Damn
It’s only now that we have met
It’s only now that we fell apart
Oh why
Is fate so selfish and unkind…

Oh, damn
I wish I met you way back then
When I was free and in love again
Like you
Free to follow my heart…

Oh, I wish I could bring back yesterday
And wake up to a love that just went your way
I make prayers and wishes in rhyme
And I wish that I can turn back time

Oh, I wish that it was yesterday once more
That things were not the way they were before
Oh, I wish I could just change all that
And make those changes to the past
Oh, damn….

Oh damn
You came late into my life again
Why can’t you ever tell me when
Oh why
Is fate so selfish and unkind

Oh damn
Romance that came a bit too late
I can’t ever have what I want and crave
Of hearts like mine
In cages and shackles, no longer free

Oh, I wish I could bring back yesterday
And wake up to a love that just went your way
I make prayers and wishes in rhyme
And I wish that I can turn back time

Oh, I wish that it was yesterday once more
That things were not the way they were before
Oh, I wish I could just change all that
And make those changes to the past
Oh, damn….

Damn…

TRANSLATION #5. I’m still stuck at a non-gay John Lloyd fandom at this point, although it was more to “my time,” i.e., the Filipino take on “Dawson’s Creek,” aptly titled “Tabing Ilog.”  This was a time when it was John Lloyd playing “Rovic,” and Kaye Abad playing “Eds.”  Here’s the translation of the Barbie’s Cradle hit.

The River

Translation of “Tabing Ilog” by Barbie’s Cradle

By the river, all the world is quiet
I am listening, to a wind that’s singing
While I’m waiting for you
I hope you come by, before darkness falls

The moments of rocking by the hammock
Of dreams that seem to have no end
The river is leading to a promise
That you’ll come back eventually

A smile, blowin’ in the wind
Tears like waterfalls
In a river with no secrets…

By the river, all the world is singing
I hope the wind won’t change, the songs that it’s singing
While I’m waiting for you
My eyes are gleaming, my heart is beating fast

The moments of swinging that cradle
Of dreams that seem to have no end
The river is leading to a promise
That you’ll come back eventually

A smile, blowin’ in the wind
Tears like waterfalls
In a river with no secrets…

TRANSLATION #6. You know I’m bored when I translate TV themes, so what better translation than for one of my favorite TV dramas, “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”  Constancio de Guzman’s classic song for the lovestruck swains – or death, or drama – whichever comes first, is beautiful.  I tried my darndest to stick to the message with this one.

Do You Remember, My Love

Translation of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” by Constantio de Guzman

Don’t you walk out the door
Just because you are poor
Because deep in my heart
That is what I’m looking for

Riches mean nothing to me
If my heart yearns to break free
I want a love that’s so true
Forever, me and you

Do you remember, my love
The promise you made to me
That your love for me
Will never fade away…

If you want to understand
Just go and open my heart
There is a picture of you
I hope I’m in your heart too

I don’t know if you’ll change
Your mind about our love
I know you’ll forever be mine
Now until the end of time

It feels good to be alive
Now that I’m falling in love
The happiness in my heart
Like our love, it’s here to stay

TRANSLATION #7. By now, you probably know I’m REALLY bored.  UP Baguio people probably know Ceres and the Bongos (Ceres was a classmate of mine in PI 100), and “Payong” is a theme song for many lovestruck swains doing the HHWW.  Here’s my take on the K-Lite classic.

Over You

Translation of “Payong” by Ceres and the Bongos

Do you want to try me for a moment
Or desire to have me in your arms
Do you want my love to be yours forevermore

Do you want to be under my umbrella
And be safe from all the coming storms
Baby in your life, I’ll be right here by your side

I will try my best to keep you safe inside my heart
Under the shade of my long and lasting love
Until the time that I’ll be tired
Of holding myself… over you

Is my name, your heart and soul is screaming for
Is it me, that you are looking for
But I don’t really know who I am to you

I will try my best to keep you safe inside my heart
Under the shade of my long and lasting love
Until the time that I’ll be tired
Of holding myself… over you

TRANSLATION #8. “Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga” was a classic by Basil Valdez, and the reprise by Vina Morales is a guilty pleasure in my MP3 collection.  Facepalm moment, it’s in my iPod, too.  So for the benefit of boredom…

I Hope That You Are The One

Translation of “Sana ay Ikaw Na Nga” by Basil Valdez/Vina Morales

Whatever do I need to do
So that you would know
That you are the one I love
Oh you know that I need someone
Like you in my life
I am alone in the world

There was a time I once was hurt
Afraid to trust again
I never wanted to love once more

But you are one-of-a-kind
You’re not like all I’ve known
I hope that you are the one

Whatever do I need to do
I hope that this all ends
This crazy feeling that I have inside
I made a promise to myself
I’ll never fall in love
But then, here I am again

No one’s gonna stop me now
And I won’t give a care
I’m screaming, calling out your very name

But you are one-of-a-kind
You’re not like all I’ve known
I hope that you are the one

TRANSLATION #9. I make no qualms or lies about my age: I’m 23 years old and I heard Roselle Nava hits over the radio… which strangely enough was playing today at some MiniStop in Ortigas Center.  One Roselle Nava hit I remember very distinctly is “Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita.”  OK, for the benefit of people who say that they were born to Katy Perry, here goes:

I Love You With All My Heart

Translation of “Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita” by Roselle Nava

Even though I’m looking like a fool
Even though I’m hurting deep inside
Or I’m crying out for you
I’m still standing here
Crazy in love with you

Even if (even if)
You’re making me look like a fool
Even though you look at someone else
Or you’re lovin’ someone else
I’ll try to act blind
Even if it hurts, deep inside my heart

‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart
(Love you with all my heart)
I won’t be so afraid or so ashamed
Of what they’re gonna say
I love you with all my heart

‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart
I’ll do everything
Just promise me you will be staying
‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart

Even if (even if)
You’re making me look like a fool
Even though you look at someone else
Or you’re lovin’ someone else
I’ll try to act blind
Even if it hurts, deep inside my heart

‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart
(Love you with all my heart)
I won’t be so afraid or so ashamed
Of what they’re gonna say
I love you with all my heart

‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart
I’ll do everything
Just promise me you will be staying
‘Coz I love you
I love you with all my heart

TRANSLATION #10. Owing to the fact that OFW’s read this blog, I decided to give my little take on (facepalm) a song I wasn’t born to, yet Fernando Poe Jr. sang it in some movie reruns and his Presidential bid.  Nonoy Zuñiga’s “Doon Lang” is a very sad song, and I tried to adequately capture the message of this song in my translation.

There I Could

Translation of “Doon Lang” by Nonoy Zuñiga/Fernando Poe, Jr.

If I only finished off my studies
Then I could have held on to my dignity
That I can boast about and show to your face
And only in dreams can I ever celebrate

Fame and fortune, I have nothing of
The looks I have is the one thing that I have enough
My mother is my only fan and admirer
And only in dreams do I emerge the victor

There I could pick up all the stars in heaven
There I could put the breeze and winds into a prison
There I could tell the clouds up in the sky to stop the rain
Only in dreams could I ever hold you once again
There I could

If not for those friends I could have finished that
Learning that leaves me more than just naught
I hope you find in this song what I really feel
The dreams I have, so brave, and without fear

There I could pick up all the stars in heaven
There I could put the breeze and winds into a prison
There I could tell the clouds up in the sky to stop the rain
Only in dreams could I ever hold you once again
There I could

There I could pick up all the stars in heaven
There I could put the breeze and winds into a prison
There I could tell the clouds up in the sky to stop the rain
Only in dreams could I ever hold you once again
There I could

TRANSLATION #11. Man, I was so bored I remembered Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, in the absolute lamest premise – yet strangely “kilig” – soap opera, “Sana’y Maulit Muli.”  While I planned to translate hits of Gary V in 1984’s cult classic “Bagets,” I decided to opt for this theme song.

Can We Start Over Again

Translation of “Sana’y Maulit Muli” by Gary Valenciano

Can we start over again
Those precious moments that have long since passed
Why did it end up this way
Did love go with you when you walked away
Can we start over again
I wish that you listen to what I have to say
Last time, tomorrow, today
You’re the only one that I love

If I could leave you all alone
I would never wish for a chance
If I could leave you on your own
I would never give you a glance
But I know that I can’t….

Bring back yesterday
A moment that’s far beyond compare
I hope we won’t throw it all away
The promise of our love

I made a mistake, I’ve broken your heart
Can you give this love a brand new start
Oh darling, hear this one thing that I want…

If I could leave you all alone
I would never wish for a chance
If I could leave you on your own
I would never give you a glance
But I know that I can’t….

You know I would do everything
The past, those moments, can we start all over again

If I could leave you all alone
I would never wish for a chance
If I could leave you on your own
I would never give you a glance
You know I still love you…
My darling, forever, you…

TRANSLATION #12. Finally, owing to complete boredom, I want to give my salutations to original Pilipino rap.  I’m not talking about Francis Magalona, but Andrew E.  I’m not a big fan of Andrew E or Dongalo Wreckords, but I do have a good memory of “Binibirocha.”  Instead of that song, I translated Andrew E’s most famous rap piece, “Humanap Ka Ng Panget.”

You Better Look For Ugly

Translation of “Humanap Ka Ng Panget” by Andrew E

Oh damn, you know what
It’s what happens when you look for a handsome guy
This is what happens when you look for a beautiful girl
So look at what happened, oh, you didn’t get none
So if I were you
You better listen to what I’m gonna say
You better look for ugly and love her all the way
Yeah, that’s what you should do
So listen up, y’all
And it goes a little something like this

If you wanna make your life happy and OK
You better look for ugly and love her all the way
So ugly that he got beaten by the ugly stick
Don’t look for one that you wanna lick
But why do I say so, it’s a simple thing
‘Coz these handsome guys, well they’re just playing
With your time, your work and your bling
But are ready to leave you first thing in the morning
When you’re down, and out, yeah, can’t you see?
So you better look for ugly girl, and on that, trust me
But if you don’t, not my fault, when you start to feel the pain
‘Coz if the ugly guy leaves, things stay the same.

You better look for ugly (yeah, yeah, uh)
You better look for ugly (no, no, oh yeah)
You better look for ugly (throw your hands in the air)
Love her all the way

She’s an ugly girl, but she loves you so
You may break her heart, but she won’t say no
‘Coz you know, you are her property
She may want to leave you, but she knows it can’t be
You may be a bit concerned, or you may worry
But who wants to know her name, man she’s so ugly
You may walk around town, and everyone’s afraid
But it’s OK, without you, she’ll die an old maid

So if you wanna make your life just A-OK
You better look for ugly and love her all the way
And if you won’t, if you don’t, you’ll just break your heart
‘Coz if ugly goes away, you couldn’t give a fart

Here’s a little story that you never heard
When I dated a girl that looked like a turd
Yeah, she tells me that she’s courted by so many guys
When I looked at her I thought she looks a lot like a guy
I tried to look up close if she’s dressed in drag
If she said she looked like Paris, well she looked like a hag!
But even though she’s ugly I fell in love
She does everything I want and she doesn’t make me sick
‘Coz there’s always that sweet kiss on my cheek

And I’m shocked!
Everytime I’m with her, I really makes me sick
I want to leave her now, but it really makes me think
Is this real, or is it all a dream?
She doesn’t look nice, but I am her king
Is that the reason why she’s wearing my ring?

Oh yeah, they may say that may brain is just a heap
But to me, yeah, you know, beauty is skin-deep
Yeah, come on closer ‘coz I have something to say
We’ve been together two years, and we’re going all the way

So if you wanna make your life just A-OK
You better look for ugly and love her all the way
And if you won’t, if you don’t, you’ll just break your heart
‘Coz if ugly goes away, you couldn’t give a fart

You better look for ugly (yeah, yeah, uh)
You better look for ugly (no, no, oh yeah)
You better look for ugly (throw your hands in the air)
Love her all the way

So you better watch out you better not cry
You better not pout, I’m telling you why
You better look for ugly and love her all the way
‘Coz the girls and the guys did tell you alright
You better find out who’s naughty or nice
You better look for ugly and love her all the way

Break it down…

  1. DK:

My dad will kill me for messing around with FPJ. Although come to think of it, I like the Tabing Ilog translation. It sounds… nice.

My favorite is still Humanap Ka Ng Panget for obvious reasons (I’m trying to be a rapper), and Claire dela Fuente.

    Damn…

  2. If you like making translations out of OPM songs, I do it the other way around. Nice job on Andrew E’s “Humanap ka ng Panget”.

“So ugly that he got beaten by the ugly stick
Don’t look for one that you wanna lick”

This is made FOR THE WIN! Yes, and I agree with Prudence on making vlogs out of these things. You could become a youtube celeb. Haha.

  3. Hana and Kurt:

It’s not your generation. 😉 I guess you want translations of Paramore or Sunny Day Real Estate or Bullet for My Valentine.

I appreciate the comments and all, but the next time you comment, please be more substantial in your comments, OK? This is a blog, not a forum.

  4. My chip-in: translation/adaptation of Bulag Pipi at Bingi

    Blind, Mute and Deaf

You’re groping in the darkness, the nighttimes never cease
Views and colors of this earth, to you they don’t exist
Friend don’t be bothered by the problems of this lonely world.
Your eyes won’t see the insanity, the tragedies will not be told.

    Chorus

The mirrors of reality show the truth within your heart.
The mass of humanity are zombies wandering the dark.
Without the sight, without the ears, they stammer, a broken harp.
A life in chain and shattered dreams, the goals can be so far.

You tried to voice the music; your lips would never give.
Unheard, the clamor in your heart, your love won’t be received.
Just lift your hands and show your fingers, so they may understand
In your muted silence; the angels wait for your command.

The hum drums of society slide like a pantomime.
The music froze in silence even after you throw the dime.
Paradise have gone astray, my friend, you won’t need to hear
The prison of your silence, is a home without a tear

  5. Doon Lang:

Doon ay kaya kong ipunin lahat ng bituin
Doon ay kaya kong igapos ihip ng hangin
Doon ay kaya kong pagbawal buhos ng ulan
Sa panaginip lang kita mahahagkan t’wina
    Doon lang

There I could pick up all the stars in heaven
There I could put the breeze and winds into a prison
There I could tell the clouds up in the sky to stop the rain
Only in dreams could I ever hold you once again
    There I could

why didn’t you use gather instead of pick up?
gapos is not prison… and it would capture the same image if you have used tie up the breeze
tell the clouds? maybe ban the rain from dropping
I think it was a kiss not holding

just my take on your translation.
I could be wrong, I’m not a tagalog speaker after all.
